The Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds, over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

About the position:
Work Arrangements: In-person and On-Call rotation
This position functions as the unit supervisor for Central Medical Supply (CMS) and the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). The incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all aspects of daily operations, including inventory management, equipment maintenance, staff supervision, and regulatory compliance. The role involves advanced clinical decision-making and independent interpretation of complex standards to develop and implement hospital-wide systems and procedures related to medical supply and sterilization practices.
This position exercises direct control over assigned staff and resources, ensures compliance with standards from regulatory bodies such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and actively participates in hospital-wide initiatives such as infection control, safety, and emergency preparedness. The incumbent collaborates with clinical departments, mentors staff, and contributes to the development of policies and continuous quality improvement initiatives to support patient safety and organizational goals.
Duties include:
Central Medical Supply (CMS):
Leads and oversees the Central Medical Supply (CMS) program for the hospital, ensuring efficient and compliant management of clinical supplies and durable medical equipment.
Leads and manages all aspects of the Central Medical Supply (CMS) program to support safe, efficient, and cost-effective patient care across the hospital.
Oversees daily CMS operations including the procurement, inventory, distribution, and tracking of clinical supplies and durable medical equipment (DME).
Monitors usage trends, expiration dates, recalls, substitutions, and stock rotation to ensure product integrity and patient safety.
Coordinates the preventive maintenance, cleaning, and repair of DME and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
Provides clinical and technical guidance to staff on the appropriate selection and use of supplies.
Maintains Code Blue cart readiness and ensures emergency supplies are stocked and compliant
Ensures all products are stored, labeled, and handled according to infection control and safety protocols.
Collaborates with vendors and internal departments to resolve supply issues and maintain reliable sourcing.
Partners with Environmental Services, Maintenance, and Safety teams to ensure CMS areas are secure, clean, and operational.
Covers CMS functions during staff shortages or critical service needs to maintain continuity.
Regularly evaluates and adjusts PAR levels based on clinical demand and usage trends.
Maintains an up-to-date DME database to support accurate billing, patient/equipment tracking, and regulatory compliance.
Sterile Processing Department (SPD:
Oversees all aspects of instrument and equipment decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution.
Develops and maintains departmental processes based on professional practice standards and regulatory requirements from AAMI, AORN, TJC, OSHA, and CMS
Designs and implements sterilization workflows tailored to hospital-specific needs, informed by root cause analysis, internal audits, and process improvement data.
Manages the life cycle of sterilization equipment including procurement, routine maintenance, and performance monitoring; ensures proper use of sterilants and chemical indicators.
Safely and efficiently reprocesses reusable medical supplies and instrumentation including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes according to professional standards and regulations that do not damage the items.
Maintains all documentation required for regulatory surveys, including sterilization records, biological and chemical testing logs, equipment maintenance logs, and competency records.
Provides guidance and oversight to user departments for proper pre-cleaning and safe transport of instruments to designated clean/dirty area(s) for sterile processing.
Represents SPD in interdisciplinary meetings, infection control workgroups, and product evaluations.
Works in partnership with Environmental Services and Safety to ensure appropriate PPE usage, space hygiene, and hazard control in SPD work areas.
Engages in direct reprocessing activities as needed to ensure adequate coverage, support cross-training of team members, and maintain personal competencies on an ongoing basis, including annual validation and as required by changes in equipment, procedures, or standards.
Oversight & Supervision (CMS and SPD):
Supervises and integrates both CMS and SPD departments to ensure operational effectiveness, compliance, and alignment with patient care needs.
Plans, organizes, and manages day-to-day operations for CMS and SPD, including staffing, scheduling, equipment use, and space management.
Directly supervises CMS/SPD staff members; responsible for performance management, progressive discipline, documentation, resolve grievances, documentation, and training.
Ensure staff maintain current certifications, complete continuing education, meet all regulatory competencies, and complete annually and as needed.
Identifies training needs and facilitates skill-building across both CMS and SPD.
Develops, implements, and revises policies and procedures to reflect current standards, technology, and hospital goals.
Audits workflows, documentation, and performance metrics to ensure quality, safety, and efficiency.
Manages departmental budgets, reviews purchasing requests, reconciles expenses, and ensures appropriate use of resources.
Holds regular team meetings to provide guidance, updates, and coaching; facilitates communication between staff and hospital leadership.
Ensures seamless cross-coverage by rotating responsibilities with staff to maintain department familiarity and backup competency.
Serves as the primary liaison between CMS/SPD and hospital administration, infection control, clinic leads, medical providers, nursing leadership, safety, and facilities management.
The supervisor actively participates in hospital-wide initiatives through attendance at interdisciplinary meetings, committee involvement (e.g., Infection Control, Safety, Product Evaluation), and ongoing communication with clinical departments.
Staff contribute to continuous improvement by preparing and delivering routine and ad hoc reports, sharing operational updates, identifying process gaps, and providing recommendations that align with departmental and organizational goals.
The unit supports regulatory compliance and continuous improvement through accurate documentation, preparation of operational reports, and participation in audits, quality reviews, and emergency preparedness activities.
Compliance:
Acts as the compliance authority for CMS and SPD operations, ensuring all departmental functions meet or exceed regulatory standards and professional guidelines.
Applies professional judgment to interpret and implement evolving regulatory standards from CMS, TJC, AAMI, AORN, and OSHA.
Maintains departmental readiness for regulatory inspections, surveys, and audits through accurate documentation and staff preparedness.
Reviews and updates policies and procedures to reflect current standards and best practices; ensures policies are accessible and understood by all staff.
Ensures proper documentation of sterilization processes, staff competencies, equipment logs, and chemical handling.
Conducts internal audits and reviews to proactively identify risks, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
Serves as a hospital-wide resource on sterilization, infection control, and supply management standards; provides training or consultation to other departments as needed.
Partners with infection prevention and safety staff to investigate incidents, implement controls, and maintain a safe work environment.

May provide cross-coverage or serve as backup for other areas within the Medical Services Section as operationally necessary.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) Three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position
Substitutions
Appropriate education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis
Special Qualifications:
Due to the juvenile population served at the MHI facilities, incumbents of this position must be at least 21 years of age.
Must obtain Sterile Processing Certification within 2 years of hire
