Role Overview:
Join our AI & Data Science (AI & DS) team for an exciting 11-12 week summer internship , where innovation meets real-world impact. This fast-paced, hands-on program offers you the opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI initiatives that are reshaping the future of business models at New York Life Investments .

As an intern for AI & DS team, you'll collaborate with our experts, harnessing enterprise tools and techniques to develop transformative AI and GenAI solutions tailored for New York Life Investments.
Interns will be placed into one of two key tracks within the AI & DS team based on their background:
Research track
This track is designed for advanced research-focused interns and offers the opportunity to:
Conduct applied research on cutting-edge AI technologies using enterprise-scale datasets
Proto@type and evaluate the performance of GenAI technologies on real-world business problems
Investigate the potential of intelligent systems to transform business processes
tackle open-ended problems that push the boundaries of applied AI in investments
Application track
This track focuses on practical development and delivery, offering interns the unique chance to:
Solve challenging business problems using advanced AI technologies
Leverage enterprise cloud platform and toolkits to build impactful AI-powered tools
deliver quick-win solutions that directly enhance business team efficiency.
Potential summer projects may include:
Exploring and evaluating GenAI tools on real-world enterprise level datasets to meet business standard and ensure legal and compliance alignment
Building AI solutions tailored to reflect brand voice and regional localization requirements, etc.
Enhancing the existing AI technologies to improve internal efficiency and user experience.
What You'll Bring to AI & Generative AI:
We're looking for curious, collaborative, and self-driven candidates who are excited to shape the future of AI in financial services. Whether you're a researcher pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities or a builder focused on real-world impact, your contributions will help advance our enterprise AI strategy.
For the Research Track, you bring:
A strong academic background in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, or Generative AI
A research-oriented mindset, with the ability to define open-ended questions and explore innovative solutions
An interest in evaluating AI model performance in real-world challenges
A desire to push the limits of GenAI technologies within applied business settings
For the Application Track, you bring:
A passion for developing intelligent tools that solve real business problems
A practical understanding of AI/ML concepts and hands-on experience building data-driven applications
Curiosity to explore enterprise toolkits and platforms, and the agility to deliver solutions that create immediate value
A mindset geared toward experimentation, iteration, and impactful delivery
Required Skills for AI & Generative AI :
We recognize that interns may come from a range of technical backgrounds. While not every candidate will meet all of the following, successful interns will likely possess most of these skills and experiences:
Core Skills for Both Tracks:
Strong programming skills in Python
Experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, nltk, pytorch, etc)
Solid understanding of foundational AI/ML concepts and statistical modeling
Familiarity with LLMs, transformers, or other GenAI models and APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Hugging Face)
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently
Clear communication and collaboration skills in a team environment
Additional for Research Track:
Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
Demonstrated experience in academic research or experimental design
Publications on top AI conferences
Knowledge of advanced topics such as knowledge graphs, text generation, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), machine translation, or text-to-SQL
Comfort with analyzing model performance and working with unstructured data
Additional for Application Track:
Currently enrolled in a Master's program in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Analytics, or related field
Experience working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and APIs
Exposure to developing web-based tools or dashboards (e.g., using Streamlit, Dash, or Flask)
Familiarity with database systems, data pipelines, or integrating AI models into end-user tools

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual's experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
