The Attorney-Referee performs complex professional legal work, including conducting hearings, reviewing complaints and petitions, addressing emergent issues, and participating in collaborative community partner meetings. Work is performed under the general direction of the Court Administrator.

Essential Functions {#essential-functions data-start="492" end="521"}

Conduct hearings in neglect cases involving the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), prosecuting attorneys, respondent parents and their attorneys, Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and lawyer-guardians ad litem.

Review case documentation, including reports from case workers, parenting education services, therapists, substance abuse treatment providers, psychological evaluations, CASA, and schools.

Conduct hearings in juvenile delinquency and traffic cases involving prosecuting attorneys, juveniles and their parents, defense attorneys, probation officers, police officers, CMH workers, and treatment providers.

Review complaints, petitions, intake reports, probation reports, and treatment documentation from CMH, placement facilities, and schools.

Handle after-hours emergency removal requests from MDHHS and certain delinquency-related emergencies or detention placements, which may require Saturday morning hearings.

Research juvenile delinquency and dependent neglect legal issues, review appellate court decisions, and prepare written opinions, including termination of parental rights opinions.

Address emergent issues, such as violations of probation and pick-up orders.

Participate in collaborative community partner meetings.

Minimum Qualifications {#minimum-qualifications data-start="1834" end="1866"}

Education:

Juris Doctorate degree.

Experience:

Three or more years of experience in family law, juvenile law, criminal law, research and legal writing, or traffic code; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
