Summary The purpose of the position is to provide medical treatment in emergency situations to include initial patient examination, prompt and efficient patient care, patient handling, and patient transport in accordance with protocols. provide physician-supervised treatment of patients seen in the ED. All candidates must have current BLS and ACLS training before they begin working in the Emergency Department. Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES The incumbent performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department. Duties include providing physician supervised treatment of patients seen in the Emergency Department. The incumbent will perform basic procedures under the direction of the supervising physician and provide assistance to physicians performing more complicated procedures. The incumbent also assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations. The incumbent must independently recognize life threatening situations and other hospital emergencies and be able to activate the appropriate codes and/or steps required to call for definitive help. Assists physicians with airway management under emergency situations and provides basic cardiac resuscitation. The incumbent is expected to understand normal and abnormal vital signs and be familiar with equipment such as pulse oximetry, EKG cardiac monitors, oxygen apparatuses and other monitoring equipment used in the ED. Additional duties include dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, urinary catheters insertion, splint, binder, and bandage applications. Specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum is expected to be a routine part of the ICT's practice. Monitors and obtains test results as soon as available and informs physicians promptly to facilitate patient care. The incumbent thoroughly and appropriately documents their actions and procedures in the medical record. Gathers screening data on patients triaged as ESI 4 and/or 5, to include: fall risk, allergies, current medications, homelessness, abuse, means and mode of arrival, danger to self or others, and exposure to communicable diseases. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience at GS-06 grade level; experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: performing observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel such as obtaining patient health history for chief complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting. This can include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, assists with the management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Possess the knowledge to recognize life threatening situations and act to correct these emergent situations according to established national or local protocols. Initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED) once trained and certified and where appropriate according to American Heart Association (AHA) protocols and policies. Experience must be current within the last year. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7 OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position. (When crediting education, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.) To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07.
