Summary The Lead Medical Support Assistant (Lead MSA) has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Advanced Medical Support Assistants and Medical Support Assistants located in all sub-sections of the Radiology Service. The Lead MSA works closely with the MSA's to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, and patient satisfaction. Responsibilities The Lead MSA is assigned with the responsibility that programmed personnel assignments are carried out in a prompt and effective manner, as well as providing assistance and training when required. Ensures that the Radiology Service's goals, objectives, and work plans are carried out and communicated. Serves as a liaison with all levels of management and executes actions. Monitors MSAs performance, and assures that the utmost, quality of care is delivered. The Lead MSA is the key liaison with the clinical staff assigned to Imaging Service. The Lead MSA must act on and carry out duties independently. The key concept in Imaging is a strong interdisciplinary team with total commitment to quality patient care. This position serves as a link between the patient, clinical/technical and administrative staff. The Lead MSA independently serves as the administrative coordinator for five imaging clinics of the Radiology Department: (1) Computerized Tomography (CT) Clinic, (2) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Clinic, (3) Ultrasound (US) Clinic, (4) General Diagnostic Clinic, and (5) Dual Energy X-ray Absorbtiometry (DEXA) Clinic. The Lead MSA has overall responsibility for all administrative components of patient scheduling, pre-procedure, pre-operative testing, pre-operative screening, pre-procedural consenting, post-operative instructions and follow-up appointments. The position operates in the hub of activity in each of the imaging clinics, patient contact includes both inpatient and outpatient customers. Patient Workload: Do to the high volume patients workload in each of the imaging clinics the Lead MSA will maintain a continuous workflow rate in an expeditious and effective manner in order to meet the daily patient schedule and/or daily patient workload in all five imaging clinics. This requires the prioritization of inpatients and outpatients as well as the ability to accommodate the extreme emergency patient who may need immediate emergency surgery, etc. Errors made by the Lead MSA could delay or adversely affect patient care, and hinder the clinic operation causing unnecessary waiting for the patient, waste of professional work hours, and most importantly delay in patient's imaging results and treatment. Qualifications Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-7 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below: Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff. Ability to provide staff development and training. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics. It typically requires sitting with sustained periods of concentration. There will be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of relatively light objects. The position may also require stooping, reaching, lifting, pulling, and other moderate exertion or strain. Incumbent may occasionally have to walk some distance to a meeting. English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j. Grade Determinations. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
