Summary Employee serves as Maintenance Mechanic within the Facilities Management Service, Engineering Branch at the Orlando VAMC. Employee is responsible to WS-4749-10 Maintenance Mechanic Foreman. Typical work assignments include the visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for, and the performance of, repair work on a level of difficulty and responsibility of maintenance trades throughout the Orlando VAMC Main Campus and offsite business offices and Outpatient Clinics. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to: Ensuring that operation, maintenance and repair of all described Maintenance aspects of building and facilities. Use a variety of trade practices associated with the occupations of woodcrafter, masonry, pipefitting, carpentry, locksmith, sign making, general mechanic and plumbing. Making and repair of high grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture, orthopedic devices and decorative woodwork for use in offices and for medical and other uses. Maintenance, repair, alteration and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures build of a variety of brick, block and stone. Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vaccum, circulating pumps and radiators. Ability to apply a variety of graphic arts techniques, including freehand, automated sign machines and mechanical lettering to produce signs, posters and displays for inside and exterior use including building and reflective traffic signs. Apply a thorough knowledge of the full range of locking devices and their parts in order to select substitute parts which would be suitable for use in fabricating locking devices to meet special security objectives. Physical Requirements: Employee must frequently work in hot, humid, confined spaces around equipment and systems associated with the utility plant. They must climb ladders, bend, crouch, stoop and endure prolonged periods of standing and walking. Employee must lift parts and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. Perform internal inspections as required by Department of Veterans Affairs. Must be physically fit as work involves lifting, pulling, climbing, crawling, working with hands over head, working in confined areas and using arm and back muscles in tightening of connections. Must possess ability to be on feet for extended periods either standing, walking, working off ladder or staging materials, and lifting equipment weighing 60 lbs. and over. Request assistance when needed to avoid injury. Working Conditions: Must work in areas of elevated temperature, cold temperature, constant noise, chemical fumes, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil greases and hot steam piping. Employee generally works outdoors, but works inside occasionally for short periods of time and is exposed to outside weather conditions. Work is performed inside and outside sometimes in severe weather, wet, cramped locations; is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases and acids. Subject to burns from steam lines, gas burning equipment, welding torches and molten solder. Education There is no educational requirement for this announcement.
