The Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has four major operational divisions: Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Civil Air Patrol, and Veterans Affairs. These divisions utilize state and federal resources to provide our communities, State, and nation with a ready military force for national defense and State emergency response as well as providing assistance to our Colorado Veterans.

The Adjutant General (TAG) serves as the commanding officer of the Colorado National Guard, a member of the Governor's Cabinet, and oversees Colorado's Civil Air Patrol and Division of Veterans Affairs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Command the Colorado National Guard and lead its 5,496 members while under State command.
Oversee the operations of the Department of Veterans' Affairs, which assists veterans, their family members, and survivors in securing benefits they have earned or may be eligible to receive. The division is responsible for operating the State Veterans Memorial Cemetery and the Western Region One Source in Grand Junction; administrating two grant programs; and, supporting State and County Veteran Service Officers in providing direct services and assistance to Colorado Veterans throughout the state.
Oversee and support the missions of the Civil Air Patrol's Colorado Wing, an all-volunteer organization, made up of everyday people, with a wide variety of skills who support three primary missions: aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services
Responding to All-Hazards requirements for State emergencies
Serve as the Governor's Military Chief of Staff
Manage all State and Federal facilities for the Colorado National Guard and the Division of Veterans' Affairs
Advocate for and lead on veterans' issues statewide
Oversee the preparation and execution of the Department's budget
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required by Colo. Rev. Stat. § 28-3-105(1) to be eligible for appointment as TAG:
A commissioned staff officer of the Colorado National Guard, who has held a minimum rank of lieutenant colonel for at least one year prior to appointment (candidates need to be a commissioned officer at the time of appointment to TAG);
Served in the Colorado National Guard for at least five years, with no less than ten years of military service;
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Leadership experience and expertise in emergency response and management
Track record as a collaborative leader capable of mobilizing large and diverse teams to find common ground and address issues
Proven ability to find innovative solutions to hard problems
Five or more years of experience with the following leadership responsibilities:
Overall management of organizations of at least 25 employees
Strategic plan development and implementation
Process analysis and improvement
Oversight of the day-to-day delivery of programs or services of an organization
