Empire State University seeks multiple experienced and dedicated Academic Advisors to provide online academic advising services to our undergraduate students, most of whom are transfer students. As part of an experienced and student-centered advising team, the successful candidates will develop expertise across various advising activities to support our students in advancing their academic, professional, and personal goals. These activities include reviewing students' goals, transcript reviews, and course recommendations in alignment with program requirements, cultivating relationships with assigned students, referring students to appropriate university resources, integrating career service resources, and helping students build academic degree programs that align with their stated goals. Provide proactive support and advisement for military-affiliated undergraduate students who are a part of the program. Strong collaboration skills, a growth mindset, and a desire to be part of a leading online university committed to student access and success are essential for any successful candidate.
Specific job duties may include:
Manage an active caseload of advisees, participating in proactive outreach and advisement throughout advisees' time at the university.
Develop and maintain mastery of the university's academic program requirements, policies, and procedures.
Work closely with students within associate and/or bachelor's degree programs to identify options that support a student's academic, professional, and intellectual goals whenever possible.
Develop an understanding of and guide students through identifying university-level prior learning that may be eligible for academic credit, following established university procedures.
When appropriate, teach sections of the university's course on Educational Planning to one's assigned advisees/mentees where applicable by program.
Promote and engage in the application of best practices, including data-driven improvements.
Collaborate and share expertise with various university offices to advance holistic student support initiatives.
Participate in regularly scheduled meetings for department updates, team building, professional development, governance, and university development.
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
Master's Degree from a regionally accredited US university or comparable non-US university.
A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in the higher educational setting with a role specific to academic advisement or student development.
Excellent and effective communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work within a collaborative academic environment with faculty and staff from multiple departments.
Desire and skills to engage with undergraduate learners in online settings, including both synchronous and asynchronous communication modes.
Desire to work with Military-affiliated students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of adult learning, learning technologies and online pedagogies.
An understanding of the Military lifestyle or previous experience working with military-affiliated students.
Experience working in an online environment.
Experience with computer databases and web-based communications platforms, including Banner, CRM, or other data management and tracking tools.
Previous college teaching experience, preferably in one of the academic disciplines offered in Business, Social and Behavioral Sciences, or Arts and Sciences.
Prior knowledge of and experience working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.
Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Special Information:
The position may require occasional evening and/or weekend hours to accommodate student needs.
Occasional travel may be required to fulfill department, division, and university-wide commitments.
