Summary This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PLMS) at the VA Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Medical Technician performs a variety of functions, including reviewing provider's orders; accessioning specimens into hospital information system; collecting, evaluating, and processing patient specimens; answering questions relative to specimens; educating/instructing and assisting with patients; and sending specimens out for testing. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Duties include the following: Performs specimen collection for patient testing and quality control procedures Validates the accuracy of the test ordering, specimen container/vials, order of blood draw, accessioning and test results through the laboratory computer system Observes and reports physical or mental changes in patient Completes Basic Life Support training and maintains certification Packages specimens at variable temperatures for specimen transport to ensure specimen stability and acceptability at the reference testing facility Utilizes knowledge of infection control, safety, and universal precaution procedures Maintains materials and supplies within their area Performs all technical and clerical aspects of laboratory operations as it relates to specimens, lab reports and lab testing ordering procedures Contacts patients to provide instructions for specimen collection, collecting specimens and drawing blood Performs other related duties as assigned DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Minimum Qualification Requirements: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled? Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of relatively standardized tests, examinations, and determinations. The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; and following written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~ Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. Note: only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a laboratory atmosphere and requires regular and physical exertion such as walking, bending, recurrent standing and moderate lifting. The work requires specific physical characteristics and abilities and dexterity needed to perform intricate analytical and technical procedures. Data entry includes patient information, test orders, and other critical data in a computer that may result in physical problems from the effects of repetitive motion and eyestrain. Specific visual requirements include vision for both eyes, depth perception, the ability to distinguish colors and shades of colors, and the ability to read ordinary @type without strain. The employee must have adequate hearing (aids permitted), and the emotional stability and mental stability to deal with stressful situations. The work involves moderate risks or discomfort associated with working in a clinical laboratory with regular and recurring exposure to hazards such as infectious materials, chemicals, electrical appliances. The employee takes special safety precautions and must use protective clothing and devises such as gloves, face shields, eye protector, and safety shields in accordance with OSHA guidelines. The employee's dress and personal appearance should reflect the professional image of a healthcare worker.
