Environmental Services

Summary
The Staff Archeologist performs under the direct supervision of a Cultural Resources Management (CRM) professional and contributes by conducting baseline archaeological, historic, anthropological, and ethnographic research in support of projects, performance of field surveys, assembling data to support evaluation of sites for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, and support Section 106 or other regulatory consultation efforts. They work with cultural resource research, field surveys, lab work and managing of field data, and contributing to the production of small-scale reports. This position requires entry-level qualifications and is supervised, led, or mentored by a higher level CRM employee. This position is characterized by a high level of on-the-job training. The person in this position should have the knowledge and analytical skills provided by a Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, architectural history, or a closely related field.

Understanding Budget and Schedule
Basic understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets. Collaborates with supervisor and/or resource manager to plan work time on assignments. Conducts basic monitoring of budget and schedule for simple project tasks assigned.

Ability to cut brush using chain saw or machete; ability to walk and hike through rough terrain, snow, and ice; ability to dig with shovel and hand tools; ability to screen dirt and sediment; routinely lift and carry between 30 and 50 pounds; ability to work on uneven ground surfaces and within small excavations. May need to work at rural and remote sites and travel by small fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.

Work may be split between the field and office. Field work is performed outdoors during year-round weather conditions. Work ranges from high-density urban to extremely remote settings. Individuals must be prepared to adapt quickly from one extreme to the other.
