SCHOOL NURSE RESPONSIBILITIES
HEALTH CONSULTANT
School nurses are health professionals working within the District.
They provide health information to parents, students, and staff and monitor health trends and problems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-Provides health counseling for students.
-Assists in developing health protocols.
-Interprets health status of pupils to staff, parents, and students.
-Coordinates health care with other specialists.
-Works on District student team evaluations when there is a suspected medical problem.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
-Makes home visits on identified health issues.
-Alerts school administrators to health trends and problems.
HEALTH MAINTENANCE
The school nurse is an experienced professional who works with other personnel to plan and carry out a total school health program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
-Reports health concerns of students to the parent(s)/guardian(s). -Supervises and monitors the administration of medications.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
-Reports unsafe conditions within the school setting.
-Consults with doctors, as needed, regarding student health concerns; provides medication follow-up as directed.
-Acts as a child advocate in child-abuse cases.
INSTRUCTIONAL FUNCTIONS
-Maintains cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instructional staff certification.
-Provides inservice training of personnel in first aid and emergency care.
INSTRUCTIONAL
Health instruction consists largely of planned learning experiences designed to influence knowledge, habits, attitudes, and conduct in regard to health and accident prevention.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-Provides classroom teaching on health-related topics, as requested
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
The school nurse serves as a specialist and consultant to the school community in the prevention and management of communicable diseases.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-Conducts communicable diseases screening, as needed.
-Monitors students who present with symptoms of a communicable disease.
-Follows District policies on communicable diseases and institutes and monitors use of universal precautions.
-Follows mandates of the Department of Health on communicable diseases.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
-None
FIRST AID AND SICK CHILD CARE
The school nurse serves as a first aid specialist and consultant to the school community in the development of a practical and appropriate system for providing first aid emergency care for students and staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-A nurse is on call within the District for consultation.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
-Performs medical duties when in a building and needed to do so. -Refers students for medical care, as needed.
SPECIAL EDUCATION PRESCHOOL THROUGH 12^th^ GRADES
School nurses play a vital role in providing diagnostic and programming information for special needs students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-Provides information on student health issues that should be included in an Individual
Education Plan.
-Provides direct health care service to handicapped students if dictated by their Individual Education Plan.
-Has the responsibility for training and monitoring of special procedures such as tube feedings, catheterization, shunt care, etc.
-Provides consultation to 504 teams when a health issue is present.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:-Provides Multidisciplinary Team with health-related information upon request.
-Consults with schools Student Assistance Teams on student medical needs.
-Observes students referred for Multidisciplinary Team assessment when there is an identified medical concern.
-Serves on Multidisciplinary Team when the student demonstrates a health-related concern.
HEALTH SCREENING
A major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-Coordinates vision, audiometric, height, weight, and oral screening for preschool, kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and all new students, regardless of grade.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
-Finds and utilizes community resources to provide assistance to families, as needed.
-Conducts blood pressure screening in grades 3, 5, 8, 10, and 12 yearly.
RECORD KEEPING
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
-Coordinates the initiation and maintenance of student health records, preschool through 12^th^ grade.
-Prepares and files yearly state immunization reports.
-Reviews physicals done by physicians and adds appropriate information to student health records.
-Prepares a yearly medical alert list for each school and distributes to appropriate personnel.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
-Documents injuries, contagious diseases, the administration of medicines, and the notification of parents due to illness or injury
-Maintains medication permission records for current school year. -Prepares special reports--child abuse and accident forms.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
-Maintains appropriate licensure and special services certification.
-Remains current on literature and updates on school-related health issues. -Participates in staff development opportunities.
