Position Information: This position primarily provides surface water measurement technical support for water right leasing in southwest and western Montana, and the implementation of Arctic Grayling Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurance (CCAAs) in the remote Big Hole and Centennial Valleys of southwest Montana. Duties will include assisting with assisting with streamflow restoration project development and implementation of the former Milltown water rights, now changed to instream flow in the Upper Clark Fork. The position will also undertake technical water use investigations in support of restoring and protecting instream flow and protecting and administering Agency-held water rights. The Hydrologic Technician 1 works closely with the Water Program staff and area fisheries biologist to support water leasing and other streamflow protection and restoration activities. The position reports directly to the Water Conservation Specialist overseeing the streamflow component of the Centennial Valley CCAA, but is also required to exercise considerable discretion, autonomy, creativity, and professional judgment as the position will be remotely supervised. Approximately 50% of the work occurs in a normal office setting. Frequent travel and fieldwork are required from April through November. Travel may exceed 2,000 miles per month and will occasionally be two (2) to three (3) days in duration. The position requires the ability to walk over rough and steep terrain to carry field equipment to data collection sites. The Hydrologic Technician I must be able to work outdoors during bad weather. The Technician must rely on experience and judgment to determine necessary and prudent safety measures. The Technician must have good driving skills required for both on-road and off-road travel and during times of inclement weather, including the safe use of all-terrain vehicles. Work during irregular hours, evenings, and weekends may be required at times. Field work is usually scheduled in coordination with other FWP staff. This position's monthly work plan objectives, tasks, and schedule are established by the Water Resources Specialist overseeing the streamflow portions of the Centennial Arctic Grayling CCAA. Location Information: The preferred location for this position is Dillon, MT. Dillon (population 9000) is the county seat and major trading area for over 13,000 people in Beaverhead and western Madison counties. It is the headquarters of the Beaverhead-Deer Lodge National Forest and the Dillon Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management. It is also home to the University of Montana-Western. Dillon also forms the center of Montana's largest cattle and hay-producing areas and is one of Montana's top agricultural centers. The area provides abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, including world-class blue-ribbon fly fishing and hunting, trailheads to national forests and wilderness, cross-country and downhill skiing, the annual Labor Day PRCA Rodeo, and the Ratpod, an annual road cycling race. The watersheds in and adjacent to Dillon drain the nearby continental divide and seven mountain ranges that include parts of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):__ The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained throughcombination of education and experience equivalent to abachelor's degree in a field related to hydrology, earth science, geology, civil engineering, agricultural engineering, or water resources, with an emphasis in water resources managementor at least 5 years of work experience that is specifically related to skill sets and abilities needed for this position.Previous experience in hydrologic measurements, water management, hydrologic modeling, water right administration, working with diverse stakeholder groups, and public speaking is preferred.Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
