Description of Job
The position provides direct, active instruction within an adult educational correctional system/facility in core academic subjects, study skills, and life skills to incarcerated students. The position will utilize approved curriculum and assessment and will be in alignment with the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) academic standards for education. Instruction will be performed in line with best practices for professional educators to include active, engaging and creative teaching, the use of technology, and assessment informed lesson planning and goal setting. The position may also deliver social science curriculum designed to challenge and improve upon thinking errors.
Job Duties include but are not limited to:
Teach and mentor incarcerated students individually or in large and small group settings to develop and promote basic academic skills in core areas to include reading, writing, math, civics, sciences, social studies, study skills and career development;
Determine educational needs of incarcerated students through review of existing records, interviews with students, and use of formal and informal assessment tools;
Use appropriate information to develop an individualized learning plan for each student which will include short- and long-term goals in the following areas: education, personal goals, and career goals;
Academic goals will include setting benchmarks and objectives directly related to bring student basic skills to a level appropriate to prepare for the GED exam and pursue additional post-secondary training and education;
Provide direct, engaging, and creative instructional strategies to guide students in meeting established goals;
Utilize direct and indirect instruction - including technology, visual aids, hands-on materials, etc.;
Employ differentiated instruction, response to intervention (RTI), and project-based strategies to ensure all students have access to education, are encouraged to persist, and meet expectations of behavior and established progress;
Work with your peers to create and manage a strong academic learning environment that also works seamlessly to transition students to post-secondary education programming;
Incorporate Life Skills, Employability Skills, and Civics into classrooms through direct instruction;
Conduct 6 month standardized assessments utilizing the TABE;
Participate in required Individual Education Plan meetings;
Work with the Special Education team to ensure IEP goals are implemented and followed;
Utilize Google Classroom to supplement instruction;
Use professional judgement and data to make recommendations for GED related testing;
Prepare reports and maintain records such as student grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details;
Observe and evaluate incarcerated student's work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement;
Document incarcerated student's achievements, competencies and contact hours towards completion of certificate requirements;
Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrate relevant information into training programs;
Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with fellow teachers in a cooperative effort to promote mutual and continued guidance and improvements;
Actively contribute to the *safety and security of the facility through effective offender management and promoting conflict resolution and solutions;
Endorse and adhere to the CDOC Mission and Vision promoting commitment and integrity.
*Safety & Security - position maintains safety and security by training inmates; and will be required to perform inmate counts, searches, escorts, movement control, and offender access to classrooms, as needed. Through conscientious observation and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline, the position promotes a safe and secure work environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows

Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
