Summary This position serves as a general maintenance mechanic, primarily painting, carpentry and some locksmith duties. You will be assigned to the building unit maintenance shop and report to the Building Unit Supervisor. The incumbent is also responsible for work order completion in the Rochester Community Based Outpatient clinics (CBOC's). Responsibilities NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 1 year). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation , maintenance, repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices. Major duties and responsibilities will include: Performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings; Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage; Installing, modifying, and repairing plumbing and electrical systems; Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned; Constructing/framing metal stud dry wall partitions and drywalling, mudding, taping, and plastering; Patching and painting various surfaces; Performing snow removal using vehicles for snow plowing, snow blowers, and shoveling; Keeping storage areas clean, orderly, and organized to maintain an accurate inventory of supplies, tools, and materials; Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions; Reading and interpreting work orders, instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades; Performing preventive maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function; Working with wood or wood substitute materials, gypsum board or fiber-cement board, concrete/rebar, glass etc.; Installing laminate and protective covering on various surfaces; Laying concrete block bricks and performing minor masonry repairs; Performing related duties as required. Related experience includes using skills from a variety of trades; primary painting, carpentry and some locksmith duties performing some of the following duties; preparing painting surfaces by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives using brushes, rollers and spray guns; constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structure using associated hand and power tools; modifying hardware or installing different security options such as padlock and hasp and deadbolts. Physical Requirements: Work requires significant lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing, and stooping. The Canandaigua VAMC is a campus like setting and considerable amount of walking is required. Strenuous physical exertion may be required when handling heavy/bulky materials such as gypsum wall board, plywood, and other building/construction materials. Use of manual and portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Work typically requires climbing on ladders, scaffolding, or other elevated work positions. Must be able to lift and move materials weighting up to fifty (50) pounds; with assistance may lift/move heavier items. Frequent standing, walking, and climbing are required while checking equipment. Working Conditions: When working in shop areas ,exposed to moderate or high noise levels from machinery, sawdust, glue fumes, and hazards related to power equipment. When working at project site, exposed to prevailing weather conditions and hazards associated with working around/ on scaffolding and ladders, and other heavy construction equipment. Subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics that are typically dusty and dirty. Follows all Medical Center policies in regard to infection control and construction risk assessments. Uses all PPE as required.
