Summary
Under general supervision, performs professional work of considerable
difficulty in defending civil and/or criminal cases and advising on
legal matters; performs related work as assigned.
Essential Job Functions

Assist in supervising and mentor Deputy Public Defenders,
investigators, and other support staff
Assist in overseeing training programs for new staff and continuous
education for attorneys
Provide legal guidance to Deputy Public Defenders, including advice
on complex cases
Review legal briefs, motions and other documents drafted by staff
attorneys
Assist in developing legal strategies and provide guidance on trial
preparation
Handle sensitive or complex cases directly as needed
Implement office policies and procedures to ensure quality legal
representation
Promote initiatives aimed at improving public defense practices
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent legal research, writing and oral advocacy skills
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
Strong criminal felony jury trial skills
Complex criminal felony jury trial experience
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
Deep knowledge of criminal law, public defense practices and
courtroom procedures
Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with
staff, clients and community partners
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
Desirable Qualifications
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and current membership in
the State Bar of Arizona; AND five years applicable legal experience.
