Summary Medical Equipment Repairer primary assignment will be to maintain all medical gas system and associated alarms, dental laboratory, operatory equipment, hydrotherapy equipment, diathermy, ultrasound and other related RMS equipment, medical beds and stretchers, clinical exam equipment, and prosthetic equipment. Responsibilities Duties included but not limited to: The incumbent will entail the installation, routine maintenance and current leakage testing, user in-service on proper daily maintenance, and modification of equipment to meet changing needs and safety requirements. Example of equipment assigned will be the medical vacuum and/or compressors, oxygen, nitrous oxide, and nitrogen gas lines, dental units, surgical lights and chairs, dental lathes, ceramic furnace and boil out tanks, critical care beds, PACU beds, exam tables, ambulance stretchers, whirlpool baths, exercise equipment, manual· & electric wheelchair and various medical appliances used by disabled veterans. Incumbent must have basic a practical knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits, the ability to interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and technical manuals to perform installation, inspection and repair of equipment assigned. Incumbent must be knowledgeable in the principles and theories governing the maintenance and repair of a wide range of equipment such as medical air and vacuum compressors, environmental control systems, electric wheelchairs, flowmeters, alarm systems, and hydrotherapy units. Incumbent has knowledge of the inter-relationships between electrical and electronic circuitry with compressed gases and vacuum systems as they relate to distribution and safety alarm circuits. Incumbent must be able to interpret technical manuals, such as, National Fite Codes and National Electric Codes as they relate to biomedical equipment. Incumbent must have a working knowledge of test equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, pressure and vacuum gauges. Incumbent works under the general supervision of the supervisory biomedical engineering technician, but is responsible for the quality of work accomplished. The supervisor relies upon incumbent to take original action in solving problems that arise to rearrange schedules to meet unusual situations. The supervisor will be advised about hazardous situations. The supervisor spot checks work for compliance with acceptable trade practices, directives, and operating specifications. Incumbent relies on supervisor and other biomedical technicians for guidance and assistance on unusual or complex matters. Supervisory control exercised over this position in general in nature and usually deals with matters related to the biomedical section objectives, policy and operation. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent's work place is the SMET workshop; however, tasks require an on-site inspection, which may be at a patient treatment area. Incumbent may be required to work in areas containing biological hazard materials, appropriate precautions must be taken. Technical and mental demands are high. The work is of a precise nature requiring extended periods of concentration. The work may require stooping, climbing, walking, long periods of standing and lifting equipment of 10 to 40 pounds and occasionally objects weighing in excess of 40 pounds.
