JOB TITLE: School Nurse Pay Grade: AP2

Supervisor: Campus Principal/Lead Nurse Employment Days: 187

Department: Staff and Student Services Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

MISSION:

JOB SUMMARY:

This position will provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by creating

a climate of health and well being in the district schools. This position will also implement the

districts health services program to best meet the needs of the student population on the assigned

campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health and safety education for students and

preventive health practices for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

? Effective interpersonal skills

? Excellent oral and written communication skills

? Valid Registered Nurse (RN) License from the Texas Board of Nursing

? Bachelor of Science in Nursing (or equivalent) preferred

? Community health experience preferred but not required

? Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

certificates

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

? Practice nursing within the guidelines set forth by the Nursing Practice Act of Texas

? Provide school health services (clinic)

? Conduct hearing, vision, spinal screening as determined by state guidelines

? Refer students in need of medical and dental care

? Report to parents, teachers, physicians and other agencies on school health matters

? Maintain current immunizations and cumulative health records on all students

? Serve as health advocate for students

? Assume authority in the absence of a physician for the care of a student or staff member

who has suffered injury of emergency illness

? Participate with school staff in development and in implementation of a total school

health program

? Ensure that medications are administered to students according to district policy and

procedures

? Perform nursing services as determined by doctors orders and/or by the ARD

? Maintain data to complete state mandated reports and school district data

? Authorize exclusion and readmission of students with contagious diseases

? Maintain professional nursing skills and knowledge as required by the Texas Nurse

Practice Act and the Texas Board of Nursing including certification for mandated

screenings and Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers (CPR/AED)

? Present health instruction to classes as requested

? Keep abreast of innovative practices.

? Be adaptable and flexible in acceptance of changes in techniques and procedures.

? Maintain a professional level of confidentiality regarding all district matters.

? Uphold and adhere to safety rules.

? Support the goals and objectives of the district and follow district policies.

? Perform other duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special

needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

This individual should be a self-motivated starter; perform tasks with little or no supervision;

maintain a proactive attitude when establishing relationships among district personnel; and

maintain emotional control under stress

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and

twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy

lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling

behavior through physical restraint, assisting Non ambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
