GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
A Planning Technician position is considered an entry-level position and often works closely with the public on a regular basis to provide customer service on planning issues. Successful Planning Technicians may be asked to perform professional-level (Planner I) duties of limited complexity as a trainee. This position is in-person and FLSA classified non-exempt.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs routine office tasks in designated program areas, including data entry, file management, copying, answering telephone, and responding to e-mails.
Develops and maintains automated tracking systems, hard copy files and records.
Provides information to the public regarding development regulations.
Research and compiles information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources.
Prepares public notices or property owner verifications.
Prepare maps, charts, tables of limited complexity.
Investigates violations of planning regulations and ordinances, including site visits.
Attend public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate.
Attends monthly Board/Commission meetings to assist with setup and takes meeting minutes.
Responds to FOIA requests through the county attorney applicable to the Planning and Zoning Division.
Reviews or assists in the review of moderately difficult development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
Prepares and presents detailed reports on development proposals to government bodies.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Knowledge of planning principles and practices, land use laws and zoning practices, plating, review of surveys, and entry-level GIS mapping is desired.
Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection
Knowledge of effective writing techniques
Knowledge of computer programs and applications, which may include Microsoft Office, database management, Internet applications, and basic GIS mapping techniques.
Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions.
