General Statement

Under the direct supervision of the Street Maintenance/Construction Foreperson and/or their designated representative, performs general skilled maintenance activities and functions. Performs all general maintenance and construction duties as required for the general installation, maintenance and repair of public streets, alleys, right-of-ways (R.O.W.), sidewalks, and similar areas. The incumbent's work schedule will be established by the supervisor and will include rotational on-call weekend schedules, and possible overtime due to the nature of the position. This position is also considered to be a member of the City Emergency Response Team.

The minimum starting salary is $22.22 - $27.44 + Competitive Benefits Eligible experience, education, and expertise may provide a greater starting base pay within the full pay range.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs a wide variety of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled construction and maintenance work, including digging trenches, placing and finishing concrete, spraying herbicides, loading and unloading vehicles, moving materials and equipment, litter abatement, painting, street patching, and curb repair.

Performs maintenance and repair work on a regular schedule without direct supervision; uses chemicals and/or other supplies.

Completes routine street maintenance assignments and activities, without direct supervision, including, but not limited to: minor street repairs, streetR.O.W.maintenance, and general repair and maintenance of public alleys and sidewalks.

Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment; performs minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment, including changing oil and other routine maintenance of appropriate equipment; cleans, maintains and stores painting equipment.

Operates motor-driven equipment and trucks on streets, highways, and over terrain; operates hand and portable power tools.

Routinely operates the following light and medium power-driven equipment: aerial lift, air compressor, asphalt paving equipment, excavator, trencher and various saws; may occasionally operate the following heavy equipment: dump truck, road grader, backhoe, dozer, skid loader, front end loader, bucket truck, cement mixer, jackhammer, chipper,vibra-plate compactor, turf sweeper, and other equipment as assigned.

Fabricates and installs street and traffic control signs; installs and repairs street lights; places traffic control and warning signs and monitors traffic flow.

Maintains simple records; reads and interprets directions and sketches.

Provides and participates in emergency responses which, while not all-inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc.

Assists other Public Works staff and departments in the planning and execution of their assignments; providing labor and/or technical assistance as required.

Assists and supports other city departments as to general maintenance projects, needs, and activities.

May perform in a leadership role occasionally on select jobs.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum / Preferred Qualifications, Experience, and/or Certifications Required

High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

One (1) year of experience performing manual, skilled, or semi-skilled construction, maintenance, or repair work in a related field such as street, utility, or public works operations.

Reliable transportation, and living within 45 minutes of the Public Works Department to be called in after work hours in emergency situations.

Must possess a valid Texas Class C drivers license; a Class A or B CDL is preferred or may be required within six (6) months of hire, depending on assignment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the assigned trade or maintenance area.

Knowledge of tools, equipment, and procedures used in related Public Works functions.

Knowledge of safe and effective operation and maintenance of Public Works machinery and equipment.

Knowledge of materials management practices, including tracking usage and identifying material needs.

Knowledge of written procedures, safety regulations, and the ability to interpret manuals and instructions accurately.

Skills in reading and interpreting safety rules, operating procedures, and maintenance instructions.

Skills in writing routine reports and correspondence clearly and concisely.

Skills in verbal communication with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.

Skills in organizing tasks, managing time effectively, and meeting productivity standards.

Skills in operating a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light to medium equipment safely and efficiently.

Ability to follow policies, procedures, and supervisory instructions.

Ability to apply sound judgment and include appropriate personnel in decision-making processes.

Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks without direct supervision.

Ability to observe and adhere to safety and security procedures, including proper equipment use and hazard reporting.
