JOB REQUIREMENTS: Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Screens all Veterans and widows to determine various Federal and State Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits eligibility and refers clients to Veterans Service Officer. Works directly with Veteran and/or their dependents to determine eligibility, completes the necessary paperwork and submits the application for Federal and State benefits. Acquires and maintains an in-depth knowledge of Federal and State VA benefits and programs to answer inquiries or to ascertain appropriate referral to VSO. Provides administrative support and assistance by performing duties to include answering the phone; taking messages; assisting clients with scheduling appointments, as necessary; and answering routine questions for VA benefits or general information. Provides clerical duties including, but not limited to preparing documents, annual reports, letters, memos, and forms; opens, sorts and files daily postal and electronic mail and keeps record of incoming and outgoing mail, phone calls, walk-ins, and appointments. Reviews online obituaries for Veterans who have passed away and drafts correspondence to families in Calumet County. Maintains a variety of complex records and reports. Enters data, scans documents, and updates computer database on Veterans, deceased Veterans, widows, and dependents. Coordinates grave site flag placement program for all of Calumet County cemeteries. Verifies that discharge papers (DD214) are filed with the Register of Deeds office. Obtains certified copies of discharges for Veterans when requested. Maintains inventory and orders all office supplies and processes requisitions and purchases orders. It is unlikely an employee will perform all the duties listed on a regular basis, nor is the list exhaustive in the sense it covers all the duties an employee may be required to perform. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. ** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to learn governmental services available to Veterans and of federal, state and county laws and/or regulations governing their administration. Ability to coordinate, collaborate and network with multiple agencies and organizations to ensure Veterans are receiving the necessary services they have earned. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Ability to learn departmental programs, operations and policy with respect to general functions performed. Ability to be professional, self-motivated and disciplined. Knowledge of business English, spelling, and composition. Ability to perform a variety of complex clerical tasks. Ability to establish and maintain effective public and working relationships.
