Summary The Nurse Manager is a registered professional nurse who exemplifies leadership and assumes this role within Nursing Operations. Functions as a clinical expert and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or supervising direct patient care. Responsibilities The Nurse Manager (NM) of Professional Practice is the designated first-line supervisory authority and is responsible and accountable for the 24/7 operation of their assigned units/areas of responsibility and provides coverage for other NMs as needed. Keeps staff informed of Bay Pines Strategic and VHA goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communication in a timely manner. Provides timely information regarding emergencies, unusual occurrences or issues that impact on nursing practice or operations to the Chief Nurse. Responsible for fostering the concepts of servant leadership. Provides leadership in day-to-day operations and provides input into strategic planning process in the attainment of organizational goals. The Nurse Manager will provide leadership in the day-to-day operations of the Nursing Operation Service. Will organize and prepare work schedules for employees to ensure the appropriate amounts of staff are available for each work shift. This involves coordination with all employees, nursing supervisors and nurse managers to ensure appropriate division of resources. Will need to be flexible and is expected to respond to any needs during National/Local Emergencies, Pandemics and ensures staff are available to assist facility, staff and Veterans. Provides direct leadership of all consultative services in Nursing Operations to include Nursing Informatics, Utilization Management, Inpatient Care Coordination, and Patient Flow Center. The Nurse Manger will serve as the Staffing Methodology coordinator and any other areas as directed by Chief Nurse. The Nurse Manager is expected to participate and promote the shared governance program. The Nurse Manager may provide cross coverage to the Nursing Operations Clinical services as needed. The Nurse Manager will provide timely information regarding emergencies, unusual occurrences, or issues that impact on nursing practice or operations to the nurse manager. Will be knowledgeable concerning the disciplinary process. Responsible for all issues that affect staffing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statement, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies. The NM is responsible and accountable for the direction and supervision of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance. They function as a role model, educator, practitioner, and supervisor providing leadership to the team. They enhance care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based cutting-edge programs/processes. The NM assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care, ensuring activities are executed in a manner that demonstrates leadership, experience and creative approach to manage complex client care. Engages in administrative nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision making and enhanced skill in nursing management. The Nurse Manager for Professional Practice holds the responsibility for implementation of the Vision, Mission and Values of the VA and Bay Pines. Nurse Manager reports to the Chief Nurse of Nursing Operations Service. Further, the Nurse Manager ensures that assignments of the staff reflect their appropriate utilization, cost effectiveness and compliance with staffing guidelines. The incumbent serves as a role model and coaches and supports staff in critical thinking regarding professional nursing practice and performance. The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring an environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff with diverse backgrounds. He/she directs practice according to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice, and is responsible to ensure that nursing practice and operations are compliant with all applicable local, VISN, ONS, or National Standards, policies, statutes and regulations. He/she ensures that nursing practice is consistent with external standards such as the TJC and internal standards such as the VA Performance Measures. He/she plays a key role in the ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of the quality and effectiveness of nursing care and services as they affect patient outcomes and nursing education. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. Proficient experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint with focus on Excel designing spreadsheets and data charts. Knowledge of data analysis and outcome measurement to improve service delivery.
