Job Summary
The Safety & Health Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating the company's safety functions and applicable corporate coordination functions. This role requires a persistent and dedicated effort to stay updated on constantly changing regulations. The incumbent must be an expert on laws and regulations relevant to safety and health in the electric utility industry and possess a strong working knowledge of regulations associated with the construction industry. The position involves leadership in Safety & Health (S&H) efforts across utility operations, collaborating with Business Unit leaders to implement and expand the Safety and Health program. The Manager is accountable for reducing job-incurred injuries and illnesses among AEP employees and those working on behalf of AEP, prioritizing the well-being of the company's human resources.
Job Description
What you'll do:
Manage Safety Programs: Oversee safety programs, recommend modifications, and evaluate protective equipment usage. Conduct and monitor periodic safety audits, prepare reports, and discuss findings with management.
Policy Recommendations: Propose changes to policies, procedures, and programs to meet safety objectives, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws. Prepare reports reflecting company accident and injury experiences and recommend alternatives to strengthen accident control measures.
Interface with Business Units: Collaborate with business units to review and formulate company positions related to proposed federal, state, and OSHA standards. Advise on safety and health regulations concerning new facilities or modifications of existing facilities.
Champion Process Improvement: Work closely with the line organization to drive continual process improvement by designing and leading proactive/preventive S&H activities.
Investigations and Inspections: Lead investigations and inspections to proactively improve hazard control programs and assess compliance with safety regulations. Audit and evaluate program effectiveness.
Hazard Evaluation: Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices, analyzing and eliminating weaknesses in the safety and health management system.
Program Coordination: Formulate and coordinate safety and health programs at all management levels.
Manage S&H Employees: Oversee future Safety & Health employees.
Safety Committees Oversight: Provide oversight and represent ETT in all safety forums and committees.
Event Analysis Management: Manage the Leading Indicator Process or Event Analysis process and the quality Good Catch emphasis program as assigned.
External Partnerships: Partner with external organizations (e.g., EEI and NESC) for safety and health representation.
Storm Restoration and Response: Develop and implement safety protocols and procedures for storm restoration and emergency response operations. Lead safety briefings and training sessions for field personnel during storm events to ensure compliance with safety standards and protocols, minimizing risk to employees and enhancing overall response effectiveness.
What we're looking for:
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Business Administration, or Engineering (preferred); OR Associate's degree with 10 years of related Safety & Health work experience; OR High School diploma/GED with 12 years of related Safety & Health work experience.
Experience: Minimum of 8 years in Safety & Health or electric utility operations or a closely related industry.
Preferred Skills:
Supervisory Experience: Minimum of 5 years' supervisory experience in Transmission, Distribution, or Generation activities, or equivalent leadership experience is preferred.
Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and/or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) are desirable.
Project Management Experience: Experience in project management is desirable.
Other Must Haves:
Safety Training Proficiency: Proficient in organizing, conducting safety training, and maintaining safety programs.
Travel Requirements: Overnight travel will be required.
