Job Summary
The Culinary Operations Manager is a hands-on culinary leader responsible for delivering exceptional food experiences across daily service, catering, and special events. This role champions culinary excellence through high-quality execution, team development, and operational discipline. The manager works closely with culinary and service teams to ensure flavorful, visually appealing food, efficient operations, and adherence to all food safety and quality standards. A strong focus is placed on menu innovation, kitchen leadership, and maintaining a clean, safe, and inspiring back-of-house environment.
Key Responsibilities
Culinary Leadership & Execution
Lead all aspects of food production, ensuring taste, consistency, and presentation meet premium standards.
Guide menu execution and innovation, including seasonal features, culinary activations, and specialty offerings.
Conduct line checks, tastings, and service audits to maintain quality and consistency across all dayparts and platforms.
Oversee catering and special event culinary execution, ensuring precision and creativity at scale.
Back-of-House Operations & Standards
Enforce culinary SOPs, HACCP protocols, production logs, and sanitation procedures.
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized kitchen environment that meets Compass and regulatory standards.
Manage inventory, ordering, receiving, storage, and small wares maintenance with accuracy and efficiency.
Submit and track work orders to ensure all culinary equipment remains in proper working condition.
Team Management & Development
Hire, train, and mentor culinary and hourly staff, fostering a positive and high-performing team culture.
Oversee scheduling, PTO, payroll, and labor planning to meet business needs.
Lead safety training and uphold team accountability for sanitation and operational procedures.
Financial Oversight
Control food costs through waste management, accurate ordering, and cross-utilization strategies.
Maintain all administrative documentation including invoices, food safety logs, and training records.
Contribute to budget management and overall P&L performance through sound culinary decision-making.
Client & Guest Engagement
Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to align food offerings with brand and guest expectations.
Uphold a customer-focused mindset across all touchpoints of the culinary experience.
Represent the culinary vision in client meetings and site walk-throughs.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S. in Culinary Arts, Food Service Management, or related field (or A.A. + relevant experience).
5-7 years of culinary and operational management experience in a high-volume or premium setting.
Deep knowledge of culinary trends, production, sanitation, food costing, and presentation.
P&L experience within contract-managed services or corporate dining is highly desirable.
Strong leadership, communication, and coaching abilities.
Experience in union environments preferred.
ServSafe certified; Washington State MAST permit required.
