The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for an expert in bridge construction and construction inspection to be responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting the Structures Construction Inspection Program and Region structures construction inspection within projects. You will have an in-depth understanding of current best practices to provide leadership and guidance, solutions to problems, answers to questions, and training concerning bridge construction and contract administration issues. You will work closely with the Materials and Construction Divisions.
Principal Duties
As the Bridges & Structures Construction Engineer, you will:
Assist in the development of training materials and provide structures construction training and support to construction inspectors and crews.
Conduct/attend meetings, conferences and training to assist in resolving bridge construction related problems and to become more knowledgeable in the area of bridge and structure construction and contract administration.
Create field construction practices and checklists to support quality improvement of Structures construction.
Review structural plans sets/contract documents and provide constructability reviews.
Develop commentary to assist with implementation and enforcement of specifications.
Develop consistency in administration of structures construction inspection through familiarity with policies and procedures associated with all aspect of the work.
Review and manage specification updates to improve clarity and quality.
Investigate field problems and provide structural construction recommendations and guidance to address construction related issues.
Verify quality control and quality assurance compliance with structures construction.
Track lessons learned and best practices to update specifications and training.
Visit project sites to review problems related to bridge and structure construction in order to lend guidance and assistance to Region personnel.
Assist in review of working drawings submitted by contractors to supplement contract documents.
Supervise direct reports including hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.
Minimum Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must
Be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
Have at least four (4) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
Preferences

Working Conditions - This position is both in-office and field work, therefore the risks are both those found in the typical office setting and those that require the use of special safety precautions.
Physical Requirements - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work and special physical demands are not required to perform the work; however, while working in the field
physical requirements of this job are moderate.
Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
