Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.
Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC's Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.
As an Accountant I you will be responsible for PHC's assigned grant and general ledger accounting, financial and statistical data along with related reporting. The Accountant ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions plus assists with budget and financial statement preparation and analysis as well as year-end audit and cost reports. Regular collaboration with PHC staff occurs to ensure financial success and viability of the organization, with continuous emphasis on quality and improvement. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are applied to all functions. Demonstrates PHC's iCare values in daily work.

What You Will Do
Prepares accurate and timely grant expenditure reports with month-to-date and year-to-date data; reconciles information to general ledger and billing of grant funds.
Prepares accurate and timely financial reporting of quarterly/annual grant and contract reports.
Reviews all financial and statistical data in grant applications and application budgets, responsible for accurate, complete and timely preparation.
Collaborates with program managers for accuracy and tracking of grant expenditures, ensuring adherence to budget. Advises managers on spending strategies to fully utilize grant funds within the grant period.
Reviews and ensures compliance with grant rules and regulations.
Prepares all required information for annual independent audit of grants, including analysis, reconciliations, requested copies, receipt and expenditure details, special reports, and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards.
Develops and maintains policies and procedures for grant accounting while suggesting areas for process improvements, assisting in and supporting continuous improvement.
Assists in preparation of assigned financial and statistical data, including assigned general ledger reconciliations, monthly monitoring of various expenses for UDS purposes, and analyzing expenses for budgeting.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications You Need to Bring
Required:
Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 2 years of related accounting experience, including preparation and analysis of financial statements.
Thorough working knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Experience in the use of computerized general ledger systems.
Detail oriented with high degree of accuracy.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Efficient computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and familiarity with accounting software.
Organization, prioritization, and time management skills with ability to multi-task and work independently in a high-volume environment.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Preferred:
Demonstrated experience in accounting with federal grant programs
Community Health Center Experience
Experience in public health and/or related health care setting.
Bilingual, verbal and written language proficiency in English/Spanish.
Proficient in computerized general ledger systems.

Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $57,200 - $71,500 annually. Candidates with extensive work experience related to this position may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay grade maximum of $85,800 annually.
