Job Description
The Connell School of Nursing has been preparing nurse leaders since 1947. Ranked nationally for our baccalaureate, master's and doctor of nursing practice programs, the Connell School educates more than 750 undergraduate and graduate students in degree programs leading to an RN, NP, CRNA, CNM and Ph.D. At the Connell School of Nursing, we know that nurses are more than caregivers, they are also educators, practitioners, scientists, and leaders. We prepare students to be all of these things, so they can achieve their personal and professional goals while improving health care locally and globally.
The Connell School of Nursing has approximately 440 undergraduate students, 340 graduate students, 55 full-time faculty, 50 staff and administrators including 15 research staff, 100 part-time clinical faculty, revenue of $47M+ and expenses of $24M. The Associate Dean manages and oversees $24M in operating, tuitions remission and gift and endowment accounts including 25 endowments and gift funds, 13 endowed graduate fellowships, and 7 endowed chairs and faculty fellowships. In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Research and the Assistant Director of Fiscal and Grant Administration, the Associate Dean helps manage the school's $4M externally funded research portfolio. The Associate Dean helps oversee the purchase, inventory and maintenance of all technology equipment including over 125 computers for faculty, staff and research and administration in the Connell School. They also oversee proposals for the maintenance and upkeep of conference rooms and offices and instructional technology for the School. They oversee any capital renovations or improvements for more than 33,500 square feet in Maloney Hall.
The Associate Dean of Finance & Administration (F&A) oversees the Connell School of Nursing (CSON) administration, human resources, budget planning, operations, and facilities. The Associate Dean serves as the chief operating officer for CSON. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean serves as a key member of the Dean's senior leadership team and serves as the Dean's senior advisor on all fiscal, strategic and administrative matters. This position provides leadership and administrative direction and integration on all non-academic and operational activities for the Connell School. The Associate Dean, F&A provides creative and thoughtful leadership for the development of funding, compensation and resource allocation strategies and policies and procedures which enable and enhance the School's mission. This position works with the Associate Deans, Chairs, Program Directors, faculty, and staff regarding all financial and operational issues to ensure that the school's financial investments are consistent with the University's and College's strategic plans.
Essential Functions include:
Finance and Budget - 30%
The Associate Dean for Finance and Administration serves as the senior fiscal and administrative officer for the Connell School and as the principal financial advisor to the Dean. The Associate Dean leads operational management for the school, with responsibility for its operating, endowed and gift budgets ($24M budget across all funding sources), human resources (100+ FT faculty and staff, 100+ PT Clinical Faculty), and operations. The Associate Dean works to ensure effective use of funds and resource allocation in support of the College's mission. The Associate Dean works to ensure the effective and efficient management of all college operations. In collaboration with the Dean and school leadership. The Associate Dean develops short-term and long-range financial plans that encompass executive management and academic priorities and is aligned with the college's strategic plan. Oversee creation and development of all budget submissions, documentation and supporting analysis. Works with the Associate Dean of Research and the Assistant Director of Fiscal and Grant Administration to manage the faculty buyout from research activities, grant forecasting, and effort reporting for all research staff. Serve as a key liaison for faculty and staff navigating university financial systems and policies. Streamline and optimize processes to enhance efficiency and reduce faculty/staff effort, identifying and implementing cost-saving measures for resource optimization. This position sits on the CSON Graduate Financial Aid committee and helps allocate more than $2.5M in financial aid funds, serving as final approver.
Human Resources - 30%
Oversees processes to ensure that CSON's programs and units are receiving HR services as needed. Implement systems, onboarding, routines and processes in place that foster a positive and inclusive work environment for both direct reports and the College, with the goal of improving retention, effectiveness and job satisfaction. Partner with colleagues in the central Human Resources Office on talent acquisition, annual merit cycles, development and retention of talent, performance evaluations, and complex employee relations. Collaborate with the Dean on organizational and compensation structures and modify as needed, as well as faculty searches. Works with the Office of the Provost on faculty recruitment and appointments and ensures that the processing of faculty personnel actions including appointments, reappointment and leave of absence are completed in a timely manner. The Associate Dean, F&A oversees all staff hiring, creation of new positions, drafting new job descriptions and updates to current roles.
Operations - 20%
The Associate Dean acts as a leader for the operational and administrative staff in CSON and analyzes operational needs, creating new or revised systems and structures to accommodate shifting demands. Maintain information on space assignments and space requirements; make recommendations to the Dean regarding space allocations; review space and work with faculty in analyzing and planning for new research/lab/other space and office needs. Lead the development and implementation of the School's Business Continuity Plans, identifying and assessing mitigation strategies for operational risks, including updating the CSON Emergency Plan annually. They serve as the primary point of contact for Capital Planning and Projects to execute space renovations and long-term capital project management. Partner with the IT Technology Consultant to ensure CSON's technical support needs are being met, and new technologies are evaluated to determine if they would enhance the academic mission or efficiency of operations. Partner with the Dean and Academic Leadership of the school to ensure that all accreditation and Board of Registration in Nursing reports are completed and filed according to the various requirements and regulations. This position oversees yearly Commencement operations for the school which encompasses three events and works with CSON student services staff on execution.
Leadership and Strategic Management - 20%
The Associate Dean, F&A, serves as key advisor to the Dean to support the overall strategic direction, implement new initiatives, and establish annual goals, integrating a mission perspective with knowledge of CSON's finances and operations, and those of the university. Collaborate with Associate Deans, Chairs, and Directors to balance the needs of their units with college and university priorities. Ensure the integrity of the school's processes, procedures, and policies for administrative, human resources, and financial administration systems. Establish goals and timetables for Operations, Finance, and Human Resources and develop strategies for implementation and oversee execution of goals. Act as manager to approximately 10 reports. The Associate Dean serves as the primary liaison between the School and the University in the areas of Provost's Office, Budget Office, Procurement, Human Resources, IT, the Police Department and Space Planning. The Associate Dean, F&A serves on the Dean's Connell Leadership Group.
Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $124,520 to 155,650; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
Applicants should have a minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible administrative experience, preferably in an academic setting, and have great command of program budgeting, financial management, and people management. A strong understanding of academic operations (i.e., working with registrar, bursar, accrediting bodies, state regulators, and faculty), specifically in undergraduate and graduate education, is required. Applicants should be able to work with a minimum of supervision, be able to work well with others, and have strong written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with Boston College and collegiate administration is desirable.
MBA or other advanced degree (completed or in process), including but not limited to M.S. in finance or accounting, Ed.D., or M.Ed. in higher education administration.
