As the VP, Head of External Manufacturing Procurement you will be responsible for the business performance and financial management of the External Manufacturing Procurement team. You will oversee a highly complex portfolio with significant growth potential, supporting increased volumes, new product launches, business development, and novel platforms and technologies (e.g., oligo, mRNA, MAPS, ADCs).
The position provides strategic direction to a global team of professionals responsible for procurement leadership in Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) strategic sourcing, selection, negotiation, and contracting for categories/modalities.
This role is responsible for leading leaders and driving continuous improvement in cost, cash, value, sustainability, quality, and supply by all CMOs. It ensures that stakeholder requirements are met and that CMO performance is measured and maintained at appropriate service levels.
As a member of the External Manufacturing Leadership Team, you will work closely with the SVP, EM Head. In addition, you will collaborate with other senior leaders (SVP and/or VP level) to develop and implement transformational business and CMO strategies that drive increased value. There will be frequent interaction with senior stakeholders in Global Supply Chain (EM, Strategy, Quality, MSAT, and EHS), Finance, and direct engagement with C-suite leaders (CEO, COO etc) from CMOs.
Key Responsibilities in Detail:
Define the strategic direction for External Manufacturing Procurement. Align the team's strategies and objectives in support of Global Procurement priorities, Global Supply Chain and EM's long-term objectives and focus areas and the GSK Ambition
Operate within the assigned budget, accountable for defining the appropriate deployment of team resources to maximize value / team contribution to meet stakeholder's needs and delivery of departmental commitments.
Lead, manage, direct, develop, and coach direct reports, and create a team environment that drives high colleague engagement
Interpret industry, CMO and spend category trends impacting GSK and develop innovative strategies and approaches to maximize the benefits or mitigate the risks as applicable.
Assure direct reports and their teams appropriately develop aligned and meaningful global and / or regional category strategies which deliver and enhance value / benefits by Business Units, Operations, and key stakeholders.
Provide clarity, focus, direction, set priorities and objectives, and through effective leadership, enable direct reports and their teams to deliver upon category specific objectives and team targets.
Enable the team to establish and maintain a plan of action to achieve agreed to savings and value enhancement results and effectively coordinate and collaborate across direct reports and their teams, the relevant stakeholders and other procurement colleagues to execute such plan.
Foster open communication and coordinate with other functions and impacted stakeholders to assure understanding and alignment of business priorities, enabling procurement strategies, mutually agreed implementation plans and compliance with the agreed sourcing strategies
Assure category management, strategic sourcing, and supplier management processes are executed timely and effectively by the team to drive continuous improvement in total cost and value, supplier performance, and service levels for the assigned spend; and support the stakeholders in all aspects of global procurement functional support as needed
Develop appropriate risk management strategies to assure adequate supply and appropriate service level of GSK requirements and maintain close integration with key functional groups and stakeholders in spend areas of shared interest.
Utilize Continuous Improvement (CI) tools and collaborate with others to evaluate and improve the team's operational efficiency and effectiveness, support needs, and to recommend organizational improvement opportunities and adjustments as appropriate.
Assure adequate stakeholder support to resolve any procurement related CMO performance issues in collaboration with the appropriate Procurement colleagues, platform and enabling functions, and key stakeholders.
Ensure procurement colleagues are executing work in accordance with all relevant GSK policy and procedures
Ensure appropriate utilization of GSK performance management tools and execute effective talent planning for all colleagues.
Work with GP colleagues to deploy professional development tools to continuously improve the leadership bench strength and organizational capabilities of the team
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain, Engineering, Science, or related discipline.
10+ years of experience within procurement gained within a global pharmaceutical or biotechnology company
Experience leading procurement strategies supporting the supply chain, including managing relationships with CDMOs
5+ years of experience leading global procurement teams.
Experience of strategic sourcing processes, procurement systems, policies and procedures and emerging technologies and supply markets alternatives
Preferred Qualifications:
MBA or advanced degrees preferred
Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities with a successful track record developing strong leaders, teams, and organizations
Proven ability to serve as a strategic thought partner to senior leadership by delivering actionable insights, influencing high-impact decisions, and aligning cross-functional priorities with long-term business goals
Experience in working across cultures and geographic boundaries; Attention to cultural understanding and empathy
Ability to operate and influence across all business units and across multiple disciplines
Exceptional communication and influencing skills
Understanding business value, business priorities, and implementation risks
Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships
Demonstrated ability to effectively use negotiation and conflict resolution skills
Ability to develop creative and innovative solutions to achieve priorities and tackle complex problems in a timely manner
Demonstrated ability to display key attributes of successful business partnering including building strong relationships with key individuals
