STUDENT LEGAL SERVICES
Student Legal Services, a unit within the HUB, provides a safe and confidential space for UW students who have legal questions or concerns. We assist students with immigration matters, landlord/tenant questions, domestic violence protection orders, estate planning documents, discrimination claims, criminal cases, name and gender marker changes, and traffic tickets, among other services. We provide free 40-minute consultations and students can hire SLS for a low hourly fee for ongoing representation.
POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for assisting in the operations of the Student Legal Services program, including supervision of legal interns, legal assistants, and supporting several administrative functions including trainings, outreach, and general office operations. This position also provides legal advice and consultation, represents clients in landlord/tenant, family law, criminal cases, and other practice areas based on legal experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Legal Consultation and Representation (60%)
Deliver legal services to clients throughout the calendar year, including during exam periods and academic breaks.Supervision (15%)
Provide day-to-day supervision and regular evaluation of legal interns who will be shadowing and observing your work.Program Support (25%)
Report pertinent information to the Director of SLS at the appropriate time.
Support and participate in outreach initiatives and community events.
Assist in the development and interpretation of policies that relate to Student Legal Services clients and case acceptance.
Work cooperatively with HUB administration staff, especially in payroll and budgetary matters.
Maintain collegial relations with faculty and staff of UW School of Law, especially clinical law program and career services.
The Staff Attorney will take a lead responsibility for two-to-three of the following operational areas based on experience and interest:o Recruitment and Hiring: Oversee the recruitment and hiring processes of the legal interns and undergraduate legal assistants.o Training and Meetings: Provide training for legal interns and undergraduate legal assistants, regarding the Rules of Professional Conduct and other areas of law. Attend all staff meetings to provide case status updates to the attorneys and provide additional guidance and instruction to legal interns and undergraduate legal assistants.o Budget Management: Prepare and manage operating and capital budgets. Present annual operating and capital budget requests to the Services and Activities Fee Committee.o Outreach: Coordinate and present workshops to student groups on issues of interest such as family law, landlord-tenant issues, criminal law, traffic, employment, immigration, income tax, contract law, immigration law, and legal careers. Develop and promote marketing materials.o Office Technology: Prepare office usage statistics. Identify sources of legal referrals and law office technology. Oversee Clio and SLS online intake process.o Office Operations: Manage office supplies, document retention, client files, personnel records, client trust account, and client billing protocols (including responding to requests for waiver or reductions in hourly billing rates in matters with ongoing representation).Related duties as assigned IMPACT TO THE UNVIERSITY This position will assist in providing direct legal services to eligible undergraduate, graduate, and professional UW Seattle students. Students often have difficulty accessing affordable legal services. Recognizing that legal issues can greatly impact a student's ability to achieve their academic objectives, the Student Legal Services program provides high-quality, low-cost legal services for students.As a result, students have saved thousands of dollars more in attorneys' fees due to the low-cost legal help provided by SLS. In addition to delivering legal advice and representation, this position will also provide outreach, education, and resources. These efforts will help students prevent legal issues from occurring, become more knowledgeable consumers, and allow students to become more aware of the resources available at the University and in the community. By educating students and ensuring that they are resourceful, students are better equipped to confront similar situations after they graduate and learn the importance of connecting with attorneys and/or other legal service providers. POSITION COMPLEXITIES Candidates will possess an in-depth knowledge of legal matters; display an extreme attention to detail; and represent clients with the highest level of integrity and professionalism. Previous experience in landlord/tenant, family law, immigration law, and/or criminal law is a plus. SUPERVISION This position reports to and works under the general supervision of the Director for Student Legal Services. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position directly supervises assigned student legal interns and assistants. WORKING CONDITIONS Position is responsible to work independently with minimal oversight from the Director. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary. Schedule can be flexible and allows hybrid/work from home opportunities with on-site work hours performed in a shared office setting. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school OR successful completion of APR 6 Law Clerk Program.
Two to three years experience practicing law or serving in judicial or administrative law capacities.
Admitted to practice law in Washington state or the ability to gain admission within six months. Active member of a state bar association in good standing. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Five years of active experience in Washington State practicing law or serving in judicial or administrative law capacities.
Experience with landlord/tenant, family law, criminal law, and/or immigration law matters.
Experience working with domestic violence survivors in obtaining protection orders.
Experience at all stages of criminal defense from arraignment through trial.
Participation in state, local, specialty, or minority bar associations.
Bilingual, multilingual, or other experience working with diverse linguistic communities.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated competency in public speaking and strong interpersonal skills required.
Experience working collaboratively in teams with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills with a focus on inclusivity and engagement across differences. Promotes an inclusive workplace culture by educating others on the importance of diversity, supporting a positive, harassment-free environment, and contributing to the development of a diverse workforce.
Experience serving the legal needs of young adult, multi-lingual, or vulnerable, populations.
