Northrop Grumman Defense Systems Sector is seeking a Staff Manufacturing System Engineer to support the Composite & Structures Manufacturing Engineering group at our Rocket Center, WV location.
This position will be located at on-site at our Rocket Center, WV location. No remote work is available for this position.
Job Summary
The Manufacturing Systems Engineer develops requirements, performs technical planning, manufacturing system development/integration, verification and validation, and evaluates cost (implementation, savings and return on investment) and implementation/program risk impacts. Manufacturing systems engineers follow projects through all manufacturing readiness level phases: concept development, design, fabrication/assembly/test at lab level, production environment demo, full production operations implementation, sustainment/maintenance/ continuous improvement. These projects focus on advanced and emerging manufacturing capabilities/digital technologies with the goal of improving overall production manufacturing quality, span times/time to market and reduce cost. Leads project technical proposal/SOW writing & estimating while ensuring systemic conversion of requirements to design, implementation and production validations. Manages project cost and schedule through all phases and execution of transition to production activities of the developed systems to program and functional manufacturing spaces. The Manufacturing System Engineer has responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:
Process Development:
Developing new and maintaining, or improving, existing manufacturing processes with a focus on production capabilities and affordability.
Develop project scope requirements, perform technical planning, manufacturing system development, integration, verification and validation.
Creating and managing project plans (tasks, resources, and schedules) for process development activities.
Specifying, identifying, and procuring new manufacturing equipment for production readiness and preparing equipment for production.
Facilitate collaboration across Manufacturing Operations functional support groups through all manufacturing readiness phases.
Developing and optimizing process parameters.
Senior technical review of process documentation and work instructions.
Supplier engagement and facilitation of supplier development and risk reduction activities.
Factory Support:
Monitoring process yields and cost, recommending and implementing quality improvements to drive improved metrics.
Solving of manufacturing problems (related to materials, designs, equipment and tooling, training, and instructions) to support production.
Assisting with the training of new personnel and participation in the design of operation training materials.
Supporting factory maintenance personnel with the troubleshooting and repair of process equipment.
Lead shop floor product / process troubleshooting across cells.
Drive root cause corrective action (RCCA) efforts.
Design and Engineering Support:
Recommending product design improvements to improve manufacturability of composite structures
Participating in design producibility reviews for new products.
Miscellaneous:
Providing supplier support, as needed, to resolve issues within supply base.
Providing Request for Proposal (RFP) input specifically as it relates to Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) requirements such as tooling, capital equipment and/or new process development.
Providing technical leadership and mentoring to less experienced composites engineering personnel.
Basic Qualifications:
Level 5: Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university AND 12 years of related professional experience in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, process engineering, or similar; OR Master's degree in STEM discipline from an accredited university AND 10 years of related professional experience in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, process engineering or similar.
Possess or ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance required.
Strong familiarity with process development, controls and manufacturing management.
Integrated Product Team (IPT) leadership experience.
Comfortable with public speaking in front of groups.
Occasional travel may be required (typically less than 10% of the time).

Master's Degree
Experience with composite structures manufacturing
Experience with strategic sourcing, cost analysis, design for manufacturing and assembly, and capital investment assessments.
Experience with a variety of manufacturing methods, materials, and interest in understanding them more.
Experience with GD&T, metrology, and quality systems utilized in production.
General experience with CAD
Extensive knowledge in US DoD product development and acquisition approaches.
Technical writing capability
Salary Range: $147,700.00 - $221,500.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
