Assistant Managing Attorney, Workers' Compensation, Los Angeles - Remote
The Assistant Managing Attorney ("AMA") will join an innovative leadership team and help drive the strategy for Staff Legal for The Hartford in greater the Los Angeles and the Central Valley Administrative Board venues. This position is fully remote. It includes leading a large and well-established team and directly managing~10+ attorneys, partnering with Claims to provide excellent results, and building and maintaining The Hartford's reputation of excellence in the local legal community. In addition to helping to provide leadership of the staff counsel office, the AMA will build and maintain partnerships with attorneys, support staff, and Claims Partners; provide oversight and guidance on case handling at the local level, and provide expertise on complex cases as warranted. The Legal Counsel for The Hartford in LA & Central Valley looks for ways to improve and help restore lives of our insureds by providing excellent customer service to our Claims Partners and insureds. This role reports to the Managing Attorney for the CAWC Staff Legal Office and is remotely based in or near LA County.
Responsibilities:
Oversee and manage assigned staff and jurisdictions dedicated to Worker's Compensation and trial work. This oversight includes determining case assignments and guidance in case handling. The AMA will also oversee the timely and meaningful communications with clients, claims, opposing counsel and the Board.
Manage, lead, and providing general coaching, supervision and professional development of the attorneys on the team. This includes c onducting manager file reviews and providing timely coaching and feedback to direct reports.
Recruit, hire and performance manage as necessary. In cases where a performance management process is warranted, the AMA will be responsible for the entire process from written warning to resolution and/or potentially termination.
Develop and maintain partnership between Staff Legal and Claim Centers. Provide high quality service and timely information to Claims.
Accountable for the quality and delivery of legal services to clients and customers of the office as it pertains to Worker's Compensation claims. Ensure adherence to all quality, customer service, and litigation management standards; frequently conduct local management file analysis and reviews; participate in countrywide quality program; and, monitor and track large loss files. Responsible for compliance with all applicable ethical requirements and standards.
Participate in and lead roundtables with insureds, Claims Partnership calls and claims file reviews.
Gather, compile, and analyze data and statistics from multiple sources for preparation of monthly reports. Create strategic plans for improvement. Identify issues that raise broad client, claim or corporate implications. Able to proactively spot trends and opportunities that will help inform strategic planning.
Adapt to all AI capabilities.
Assume proactive, leading role in requisite training of staff on legal issues and goals.
Assist with recruiting process, including hiring, developing and retaining outstanding legal staff and support staff. Identify top talent; focus on development and "re-recruiting" this talent.
Promote diversity and inclusion within the team; proactively promote and sustain an inclusive, welcoming, and team-oriented work environment among all office and remote staff.
Provide high quality legal representation to clients when the business need arises.
Qualifications
7+ years of law practice, with a minimum of 5+ years of workers' compensation litigation experience. Preferred candidates have both law practice and carrier experience. Member in good standing of all state and federal bars where attorney has been admitted.
Strong litigation background including experience and proficiency in complex workers' compensation litigation, including trial experience in workers' compensation litigation, preferably in the field of insurance defense.
Demonstrated leadership ability and a successful track record mentoring or managing a team required (formal or informal).
Demonstrated ability to influence a team with proven results.
The ability to inspire others and adapt to new capabilities with minimal supervision.
Able to work independently; high degree of personal accountability.
Innovative, intellectually curious, and a strategic thinker; visionary; able to anticipate and be proactive and resourceful.
Experience analyzing data and able to derive value added business insights from this analysis.
Ability to influence and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; advanced Excel skills required.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$137,360 - $206,040
