POSITION SUMMARY
Supervises and directs the inspection of all buildings throughout the City for compliance with Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, Pittsburgh's adopted Codes and Zoning Ordinances, etc.

A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License at the time of filing application or prior to appointment, which must be maintained throughout employment. UCC #15 - Building Inspector Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of date of employment and maintained throughout employment.
UCC #23 - Accessibility Inspector/Plans Exam Certification must be obtained within nine (9) months of date of employment and maintained throughout employment.
UCC #22 - Energy Inspector Certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months of date of employment and maintained throughout employment.
UCC Building Code Official Certification must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of date of employment and maintained throughout employment.
NOTE: The City of Pittsburgh, as a matter of policy, conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. The background investigation includes but is not limited to criminal background, driver's license and City of Pittsburgh real estate tax payments. Candidates may be disqualified from consideration from employment based on the results of their background investigation (as it relates to the job for which the applicant is being considered).

QUALIFYING REQUIREMENTS:
Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.
WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show six (6) years of full-time experience in building trades (e.g., mechanical/HVAC, insulation contracting, general construction, etc.) , and/or inspections, preferably ensuring that construction conforms to building plans, codes and regulations . The application must include at least two (2) years of experience supervising a team. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a GED or high school diploma. Bachelor's Degree in construction-related or trade-related fields preferred.
EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted for work on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is six (6) years. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training.)
CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS
If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES
Supervises and directs the work of all inspectors assigned to their district, by making assignments, reviewing inspection notices, work write-ups and violation notices.
Checks old and new construction for compliance with applicable Codes, Ordinances and procedures.
Supervises assigned personnel; evaluates work; recommends and implements approved disciplinary and/or corrective action; provides training and/or technical assistance as requested or required.
Answers complaints and questions concerning job-related matters by telephone, in writing and/or email.
Meets with City residents, individually or in groups, to apprise them of relevant government programs, violations and necessary corrections, etc.
Maintains relevant records on inspections; reviews daily reports; and provides daily reports to supervisor for preparation of monthly and annual inspection and abatement reports.
Makes court appearances on behalf of the City when assigned or required.
Assists City emergency response as Department 24-hour emergency on-call representative approximately one week per month on a rotating basis.
Works evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
Plans, develops, directs, coordinates, organizes and controls the materials, equipment, and personnel under jurisdiction toward the effective, efficient and economical attainment of program goals, including maximum convenience to the public and safety of employees.
Manages area of responsibility in strict accordance with applicable laws, regulations and established policy including union agreements to ensure fair and standardized treatment of employees.
Performs activities and functions of related personnel and other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
