The State of Maryland is seeking Accounting professionals to fill intermediate level positions in the state as an Accountant I.

GRADE

Grade 15: $57,275 - $92,108/year

LOCATION OF POSITION

This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies across the state of Maryland. When completing the application, select all the locations you are willing to work.

POSITION DUTIES

The key responsibilities for an Accountant I include examining, analyzing, and interpreting accounting systems, records, and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles in order to modify and maintain agency accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements, and give fiscal advice to management. Note that employees in this classification do not supervise accountants.

Specific activities this role may perform include:

Modifying and implementing manual and automated systems to meet the specific fiscal requirements of the agency;

Interpreting and applying pertinent laws and regulations to fiscal and accounting operations;

Developing and revising accounting policies to improve accounting controls and efficiency;

Formulating internal controls to ensure the reliability and security of funds and records;

Reviewing and authorizing financial transaction records for submission to fiscal control agencies;

Performing reconciliations of entire accounts by determining the materiality of exceptions, selecting the proper accounting treatment, gauging the effect of adjustments on the entire system, and maintaining documentation for audit trails;

Preparing financial reports and statements by ensuring that accounting records provide a reliable and adequate basis for required reports, developing and implementing procedures for producing reports, and analyzing and interpreting the reports;

Assisting with close-out by ensuring that items are properly accrued and adjusted at fiscal year end;

Advising management on the status of accounts and recommends alternatives to improve the agency's financial position;

Participating in the audit process of agency fiscal operations by providing auditors with explanations of accounting procedures, providing documentation of fiscal transactions, and assisting in the formulation and implementation of corrective action plans precipitated by audit exceptions;

Acting as a liaison with information processing and fiscal control agencies to resolve accounting records and systems problems;

Adapting procedures and formulates reporting techniques to comply with statewide fiscal requirements and special requirements of other funding sources;

Performing other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:A bachelors degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including

or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.

AND

Experience:One year of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.
