SUMMARY
The Charge Nurse is a professional care giver who assumes overall responsibility and accountability of hospital operations in the absence of, or under the guidance of the Inpatient Manager, CNO or CEO. As an RN this position is expected to assess patients nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory into clinical practice in the Inpatient Department. The position must be able to apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate safe patient care and continue to analyze ongoing assessment data to determine safe patient outcomes. This position requires State Licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) who will collaborate and integrate information from patient and family working with multi-disciplinary team members.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following)
Perform administrative duties, includes ensuring there is adequate staffing in relation to patient acuity, census and patient loads, and to manage/delegate any floating or low census needs.
Interact with all visitors, providers, coworkers and other departments in a customer friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
Supervises nursing staff and their day to day duties on behalf of senior management.
Check condition of assigned patients to ensure they are receiving quality healthcare and to determine need for additional or modified services based on assessment of needs.
Able to competently assume direct patient care responsibility for an Inpatient or Emergency Department team in situations of high census and/or unforeseen circumstances until relief can be obtained.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
Have a current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa or is eligible for reciprocity or has a work permit issued by the State of Iowa
Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration and action of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
ACLS certification
PALS preferred
TNCC preferred
3-5 years of clinical experience preferred
Previous supervisory experience preferred
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to delegate responsibilities to others to effectively manage patient census and nurse to patient ratio.
Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for pediatric through geriatric patients.
