JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Assistant State Attorney, Postconviction/Trial Support

Position Summary:

Assistant State Attorneys in the Postconviction/Trial Support Division are responsible for prosecuting criminal cases for the 6th Judicial Circuit after the conviction and appeal is final through the end of incarceration. Assistant State Attorneys in the Postconviction/Trial Support Division must be able to work independently to analyze the facts and circumstances of cases while utilizing procedural and substantive aspects of criminal law and postconviction law.

Applicant must be a member of the Florida Bar in good standing with at least 3 years of experience. Annual salary for attorneys at this level of experience is $76,000 and includes State of Florida employee retirement and insurance options, attorney benefits including low cost, high quality insurance, paid holidays, pension or investment plan retirement options and leave.

Attorney responsibilities include but are not limited to: prosecutorial criminal casework requiring preparation of legal documents, legal research, taking of depositions, and interviewing of witnesses, victims and other parties to ascertain facts of case for prosecution. Postconviction work includes case preparation for court presentation, examining and cross-examining witnesses/defendants/victims, and summarizing cases for presentation for non-jury evidentiary hearings. Trial support work includes reviewing public records, assisting with civil litigation, and researching complex legal issues. Duties of the position require professional interaction with the public, law enforcement, and office staff.

The duties of the position require proficient management of detailed case work and the ability to use office computer software and equipment. Applicant must have knowledge and ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Duties also require the employee to perform various frequent and repetitive actions/duties, in use of computer programs/keyboard and telephone. Ability to work as a team and regular, in-office attendance is required.
