The Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with public-sector accounting standards, bank reconciliation, investment tracking and supporting the financial operations of the SouthWest Transit. This role plays a key part in budgeting, financial reporting, grant accounting, and ensuring responsible stewardship of public funds.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Prepare and maintain general ledger accounts in accordance with governmental accounting standards (e.g., GASB).

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.

Assist with development, monitoring, and analysis of operating and capital budgets.

Track and reconcile fare revenue, subsidies, and other funding sources.

Manage grant and subsidy accounting, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local funding requirements.

Support annual audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.

Reconcile bank accounts, fuel cards, and other transit-related financial accounts.

Monitor expenditures related to fleet maintenance, fuel, facilities, and capital projects.

Ensure compliance with internal controls, procurement policies, and public-sector financial regulations.

Assist in financial forecasting and cost analysis related to routes, services, and capital investments.

Maintain accurate financial records and ensure timely reporting to regulatory and funding agencies.

Prepare and post accurate journal entries, ensuring proper documentation and timely month-end and year-end close processes.

Support capital asset planning, including tracking fleet vehicles, infrastructure, and equipment; maintaining detailed fixed asset records; and assisting with capital improvement program (CIP) reporting and compliance requirements.

Assist the Finance Manager with budget preparation and forecasting, including compiling financial data, preparing supporting schedules, and conducting variance analysis.

Minimum Education Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Minimum Experience Required

Minimum of 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in government, public transit, or a public-sector organization.

Experience with fund accounting and grant management preferred.

Strong knowledge of governmental accounting principles (GASB).

Proficiency in accounting software and enterprise financial systems.

Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and financial analysis.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to interpret financial data and prepare clear reports.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

CPA or CMA certification.

Experience with transit funding programs (e.g., federal or state transportation grants).

Familiarity with capital project accounting and asset management.
