A Medical Assistant (MA) is a healthcare professional who performs various administrative and clinical tasks to support the work of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers. The role involves both direct patient care and behind-the-scenes administrative duties, ensuring the smooth operation of a medical office or healthcare facility.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support:

Take and record patient vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, weight, height).

Prepare patients for examination and assist healthcare providers during exams or procedures.

Perform basic laboratory tests (e.g., urinalysis, blood draws) as instructed.

Administer medications or injections as directed by the healthcare provider.

Sterilize medical instruments and maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.

Perform routine medical procedures, such as EKGs, nebulizer treatments, or wound dressing changes.

Administrative Support:

Schedule patient appointments, including follow-ups and referrals.

Maintain patient records and update information in electronic health records (EHR) systems.

Process insurance information, billing, and claims.

Handle patient intake forms, medical histories, and other required documentation.

Answer phone calls and direct them to the appropriate department or personnel.

Coordinate communication between patients and healthcare providers.

Assist with office management tasks such as filing, inventory, and ordering supplies.

Patient Interaction:

Provide excellent customer service by addressing patient inquiries and ensuring a positive experience.

Educate patients on prescribed treatments, medications, and follow-up care.

Ensure patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Team Collaboration:

Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide quality care.

Participate in meetings, training, and continuing education to maintain skills and certifications.

Assist with medical procedures and any other clinical tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Completion of a medical assistant program from an accredited institution (preferred).

Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA) is preferred or required.

Basic knowledge of medical terminology, office procedures, and EHR systems.

Ability to perform clinical tasks under supervision.

Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.

Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds.
