The Prosecuting Attorney is seeking an individual with excellent communication and organizational skills to fill the Child Support Specialist position. The selected candidate will investigate cases to establish paternity and income support for minor children. As part of that, they will collect and evaluate information to locate absent parents and determine the financial status of parents. In conjunction with the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, recommendations are prepared and presented to the court. Ideal candidates will be proficient with computers and either have experience working in a professional legal environment or a strong desire to do so. On the job training will be provided.

Examples of Duties

In conjunction with the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, investigates Social Security Title IV-D cases to establish paternity and income support for minor children. Prepares and presents recommendations to the court.

Interviews custodial parent to determine financial status by gathering information related to wages earned, insurance costs and any contributions made by the non-custodial parent. Obtains information related to overnight visits by each parent.

Reviews income and business tax forms, financial statements, payroll records, supplemental social security income, and other records to establish accurate income levels for custodial and/or non-custodial parent(s).

Calculates imputed income for unemployed non-custodial parent based on prior earnings or potential earnings of non-custodial parent with no earnings history.

Responds to client requests for information and explains the terms and conditions of court orders.

Generates documentation by electronically entering paternity and non-support cases in the State of Michigan's database.

Schedules DNA testing appointments, hearings and trials. Collects DNA samples from parties and submits to laboratory for purposes of determining paternity status. Electronically retrieves results.

Locates absent parents through the development and use of a variety of resources such as the postal service, financial institutions, credit reporting agencies, state and federal parent locator services and military locator services.

Interviews custodial parents, witnesses, family members, recent employers, etc. to gather information to use in locating absent parents.

Applies the Michigan Child Support formula to actual or imputed income to calculate the appropriate amount of income support.

Prepares reports of facts and findings and presents recommendation for income and medical support to the Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.

Arranges service through process servers prior to the summons expiring. For out of county inmates, coordinates with the relevant correctional facility to serve documents. May serve summons and complaints on-site, including in-county inmates, regarding paternity and child support matters. Reviews invoices for service.

Prepares various motions, orders, warrants, subpoenas, and other legal forms and documents, including child support complaints. Types briefs and correspondence for the legal staff. Proofreads documents for spelling, punctuation, grammar and format and prepares envelopes for mailing when necessary.

Conducts pre-hearing conferences with clients and prepares consent support orders according to the Michigan Child Support Guidelines resulting from voluntary agreement of the parties.
