The Substitute School Nurse provides high-quality health services to students and staff during the temporary absence of the assigned school nurse. This role is essential to maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment by delivering skilled nursing care, administering medications, responding to emergencies, and promoting student wellness.

Substitute School Nurses may be assigned to elementary, middle, or high school settings and are expected to adapt nursing practices to meet the developmental, emotional, and physical needs of students across grade levels. The ideal candidate demonstrates clinical competence, professionalism, and a compassionate, student-centered approach to care. Key Responsibilities Include:

Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff experiencing illness or injury.

Administer prescribed medications and treatments in compliance with physician orders, district policies, and state regulations.

Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential health records, documentation, and daily logs.

Implement and follow Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with identified health needs.

Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, school staff, and administrators regarding health-related concerns.

Monitor, document, and report communicable diseases in accordance with district procedures and Department of Health guidelines.

Manage and monitor chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, and seizure disorders throughout the school day.

Promote a safe and healthy school environment through adherence to infection prevention and control practices.

Collaborate with district nursing staff and school administrators to ensure continuity of care and consistent health services.

Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism when assigned to various school buildings and grade levels.

Maintain a calm, compassionate, and professional demeanor when supporting students and staff.

Qualifications:

Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in New York State (required).

Current certification in CPR and First Aid (required).

Prior experience in pediatric, community health, or school nursing preferred.

Ability to work independently and exercise sound clinical judgment, particularly in emergency situations.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with students, families, staff, and administrators.

Knowledge of state and district health regulations, immunization requirements, and infection control standards.

Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, ethical practice, and professional standards.
