POSITION: #00005 Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney for Wythe County, Virginia

Job Description:

Prosecute criminal cases in General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District court and Circuit Court.

Assist and communicate with members of the public who have been victims of criminal activity.

Responsibilities:

Prepares and prosecutes misdemeanor and felony criminal cases in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, General District Court, and Circuit Court. Screens cases for prosecution.

Performs legal research.

Locates and interviews trial witnesses.

Prepares motions, orders, and other documents related to a case.

Investigates terms and conditions of bonds.

Prepares legal briefs and petitions to the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. Keeps abreast of appellate court opinions and understands their application to cases. Maintains current knowledge of trends, legal issues and rulings, court opinions, legal procedures, and new state and local laws. Provides services to the community outside of business hours, such as educational trainings for law enforcement, students, and civic groups. Performs other tasks related to employment as required by the Commonwealth's Attorney.

Specifications:

Ability to perform intricate and rapid legal research and to prepare legal briefs to trial and appellate courts.

Ability to communicate effectively with law enforcement, expert witnesses, lay witnesses, and victims. Ability to prepare and present complex cases before a trial court in a short period of time. Ability to establish and maintain constructive, effective, and professional relationships with fellow attorneys, public officials, judicial officers, and the public. Ability to present ideas and provide counsel effectively in writing and orally to professionals and lay persons. Ability to manage a large caseload.

Strong writing and oral presentation skills a must.

Other Requirements:

Must have satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.

Juris Doctorate degree from accredited institution and licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and be an Active Member in Good Standing with the Virginia State Bar. Must possess good communication skills and a desire to work with the public in a demanding environment. At least 4 years prosecution experience

Salary:

Up to $101,630.00
