Automated Side Loader Driver - Job Description

Position Summary

The Automated Side Loader Driver is responsible for safely operating an automated refuse collection vehicle while providing efficient, reliable, and courteous waste and recycling collection services. This position requires adherence to all company safety policies, Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and established route procedures while delivering excellent customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Vehicle Operation

Safely operate an automated side-loading refuse truck on assigned residential and commercial routes.

Maneuver the vehicle safely in residential neighborhoods, narrow streets, cul-de-sacs, alleys, and other confined or high-traffic areas.

Follow all traffic laws, company policies, and defensive driving practices.

Equipment Operation

Operate the hydraulic automated lifting arm using in-cab controls to safely grab, lift, empty, and return waste and recycling containers.

Monitor equipment during operation and immediately report any mechanical issues or malfunctions.

Use equipment in a safe manner to prevent damage to customer property, company equipment, or surrounding infrastructure.

Safety and Compliance

Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) accurately.

Report all vehicle defects, accidents, injuries, property damage, and safety concerns immediately.

Comply with all DOT regulations, company safety policies, and environmental standards.

Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Route Responsibilities

Complete assigned routes efficiently while maintaining service quality.

Ensure containers are fully emptied and returned to their original location whenever possible.

Leave customer locations clean by removing any debris or spilled material resulting from collection.

Maintain route productivity while ensuring safe operation at all times.

Communication

Maintain communication with dispatch and operations personnel throughout the workday.

Report service delays, inaccessible streets, blocked containers, overweight carts, contamination issues, or customer concerns immediately.

Accurately complete all required paperwork and electronic documentation.

Qualifications and Requirements

Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Air Brake Endorsement required.

Minimum of one (1) year of commercial vehicle driving experience preferred (or equivalent military driving experience).

Must be at least 18 years of age.
